Liposuction - liposculpture
Surgery performed in order to achieve a better contour of the body and harmonious silhouette by the removal of fat deposits that still persist after a diet and exercise regimen, through the suction of fat by a vacuum mechanism. As mentioned above, it is recommended for patients that present excess fat deposits, and it should not be used as a weight loss method. Young patients with elastic skin present better results, for liposuction does not remove skin or tissue and thus the presence of excess skin after the surgery will depend solely on the individual’s skin retraction capabilities. Liposuction is done using the wet technique, with the injection of physiological saline solution in order to reduce blood loss on the fat that is to be removed. Most common areas in which liposuction is performed include the chin, the arms, thorax, abdomen, thighs, legs, back, knees and buttocks. Scars resulting from liposuction are very small, approximately 2 to 5 mm, and are placed on hidden areas of the body, such as under the tan line, inside the belly button or at the fold of the breasts. They are usually of good quality, being barely noticeable. The excess of fat removed may be reinjected in the body, be it to correct any deformities or to enlarge the buttocks, per instance. The latter procedure is called liposculpture. Cellulite on the buttocks may be reduced with liposculpture. The duration of the surgery is that of 1 to 3 hours and it may be performed as an ambulatory procedure or with hospital admittance for a day, under local, epidural or general anesthesia.Postoperative pain is well tolerated with the use of common painkillers. Some edema and burning sensation may occur post-op, and the patient is required to wear a compression garment for approximately 45 days after the surgery. The patient is also required to undergo several post-op physical therapy sessions as to reduce undulations, bruises and scars. Most patients return to their normal activities after 1 to 2 weeks, and should abstain from more rigorous activities for a period of 4 weeks. Maintenance of the results will depend on the diet and exercise regimen of the patient, and weight gain should be avoided. Liposuction may also be performed by the traditional technique, with use of a vibrating suction device that, through regular lateral movements of the tip of the cannula, favors the removal of finer fat on areas of the body where liposuction and post-op physical therapy were already performed and that present more rigid fat deposits.
